Drywall glossary

Drywall

(also known as plasterboard, wallboard, sheetrock, gypsum board) is a panel made of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper. It is used to make interior walls and ceilings. This type of construction became prevalent as a speedier alternative to traditional lath and plaster.

Sheetrock

a plasterboard made of gypsum layered between sheets of heavy paper.

Drywall tape

tape used to cover joints in drywall which prevents future cracking.

Drywall compound

this is a white powder of primarily gypsum dust mixed with water to form a mud the consistency of cake frosting, which is used with paper or fiber joint tape to seal joints between sheets of drywall to create a seamless base for paint on interior walls.

Drywall stilts

stilts in drywalling are aluminium stilts used in the finishing of drywall.

Gypsum ceiling

drywall ceiling is a ceiling made of gypsum board

Soundproof drywall

soundproof drywall is a drywall partition which is insulated with soundproof material

Popcorn ceiling

A popcorn ceiling (slang), also known as cottage cheese ceiling or Stucco ceiling or more accurately an Acoustic ceiling, is a term for a spray-on or paint-on ceiling treatment used from the late 1950s into the 1980s in American residential construction.

Suspended ceiling

A suspended ceiling is a secondary ceiling, hung below the main (structural) ceiling. It may also be referred to as a drop ceiling, T-bar ceiling, false ceiling, grid ceiling, drop in ceiling, drop out ceiling, or ceiling tiles and is a staple of modern construction and architecture in both residential and commercial applications.

Drywall screws

Sheetrock ceiling

Bulkhead ceiling

bulkhead ceilings are made from plasterboard and protrudes from the wall or from the main ceiling and used as an attractive interior design feature

Drywall insulation

this insulation is used to make drywalling soundproof or fireproof. It is inserted into steel frames and timber frames of the drywall and is made of glass wool

Drywall stand

A special stand or lift is used to lift plasterboards up to the ceiling and keep them in place while installing the plasterboards

Drywall paint

the paint used is normally an acrylic PVA used to paint partitions and ceilings

Drywall track: tracks are aluminium tracks installed onto the floor and ceiling which hold the studs in place

Drywall stud

these are connected to the tracks and are what the plasterboards are connected to, to construct partitions

Drywall cutter

this is a tool used to cut drywall neatly and effectively however a utility knife is also commonly used

Drywall hammer

a tool is a special type of hammer used in drywalling
